The Sander table, from 2010 consists of a mouth-blown crystal cone paired with a hardened circular glass tabletop.

Swedish glassmaking tradition meets high tech in this exquisite side table, consisting of a hand blown, conical base attached to a hardened glass top using ultraviolet cured adhesive.

initially, the cone is a bottle, but the base is knocked off using a cold tool against the hot glass. The basic shape is denoted by three circles, and the magic is in a neck so narrow that it looks like it might fall right off. It does not, however, because the adhesive attaching the glass tabletop is cured with a UV light. This technology can only be used on glass and makes the joint stronger than the actual material.

Hand-blown glass

Glass is a fascinating material – clear, pure and uncomplicated visually. But when you get into the process of working with it, it’s incredibly complicated. There are many rules and restrictions, so I wanted to play with contrast of how it looks so simple but needs a lot of precision in the production process.

Chris Martin

After working as an assistant in Jasper Morrison’s studio in London, British designer Chris Martin left the UK and moved to Stockholm, where he worked as a freelance designer for IKEA and met Swedish designer Magnus Elebäck. In 2009, the pair joined forces to establish Massproductions – a furniture company that prides itself on producing “high quality, tactile furniture in a modernist spirit”.
