As with many words, CHIARO has several definitions: clear, bright, and straightforward.

Chairs are inherently intuitive. The proportions of a seat and backrest immediately suggest their purpose, and regardless of formal expression, we instinctively know how to use them.

Beyond function, however, furniture has a remarkable ability to shape atmosphere. Combining advanced manufacturing technology with exceptional craftsmanship, Mattiazzi can work timber into forms that are both refined and technically sophisticated.

Designed by Hermann August Weizenegger, Chiaro is not a radical chair. Its connections are clear and uncomplicated, while the distinctive structure beneath the seat emerged from a desire to simplify the joinery and reduce the overall number of components. The result is a chair that feels effortless, honest and resolved.

Available with or without armrests, both versions are stackable for efficient storage and transport. Chiaro is offered in natural oak, natural ash, and stained ash finishes in white, grey, red, blue, yellow and black.

A non-removable upholstered seat option is also available for added comfort.

Ash or Oak of European origin and legal wood cutting (controlled deforestation).

Chairs by nature are straightforward — the proportions of a seat and back suggest a place to sit, and regardless of their formal language, most of the time we know what to do with them. Beyond physical function, furniture has a powerful ability to transform atmosphere. It is fascinating that despite technological progress, our fundamental need for chairs seems to endure, while the appearance of many chairs does not. A number of mysterious variables decide which designs find long term success.

Judging from history, one might guess that in order to last a chair must be culturally poignant, technologically or ergonomically innovative, or able to solve a particular need effectively. Sophisticated manufacturing technology and handcraft give Mattiazzi the rare ability to shape wood in almost any form.

Although I was extremely tempted to explore those boundaries, CHIARO is not a radical chair. This design flirts with notions of an archetype to create what seems to be an ordinary design that is both visually and physically comfortable in many different environments.

Leon Ransmeier

Leon Ransmeier is the founder and director of Ransmeier Inc., a New York–based design office. A graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design, his work has been published internationally and is included in the permanent collections at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, and the RISD Museum.
