The new Hames Sharley Melbourne studio resembles a bold shift in their practice with a design that celebrates divergent thinking and the core philosophy of creativity through feeling, transforming a once-static office into an adaptive space that allows our people to flourish.

Situated on the third level of a 1930s Art Deco building with modern gothic features, great care was taken to honour its historical significance. Drawing inspiration from the sturdy structural grid characteristic of the Art Deco era, the interior design seamlessly integrates with the existing architecture. Strategically positioned walls mimic the alignment of columns and window alcoves, while boomerang-shaped furniture echoes the unique contours of the alcove windows. Original steel windows offer captivating views of Collins Street’s tree-lined surroundings.

The studio’s main area spans the entire floor, inviting guests into a collaborative zone enhanced by a ‘maker space’ that celebrates the studio’s hands-on and exploratory approach to design. The layout, designed as an energy map, transitions from high-intensity, active zones near the entrance to low-intensity, tranquil areas at the opposite end, catering to varying sensory preferences and daily needs of team members.

In line with the commitment to carbon neutrality, the studio features materials that promote regenerative design practices. Original terracotta structural tiles are preserved and influence the interior palette, while sustainable cork walls and floors contribute to a carbon-negative footprint. Furniture choices prioritize flat-packed items with innovative or heritage qualities, such as the Thonet Le Corbusier Chairs designed contemporaneously with the building. Additionally, the selection of ‘Path’ task chairs and Moto workstations reflect the focus on high sustainability standards, minimizing environmental impact.

Despite facing post-COVID economic challenges during construction, cost-effective strategies were implemented by adopting alternative procurement methods, including sourcing items from local thrift shops and directly engaging with suppliers. The dedication to supporting female designers, local Australian furniture manufacturers, and First Nations artisans underscores the commitment to community empowerment and sustainability.

The studio’s vibrant communal space serves as a hub for the Melbourne community, hosting various events such as design workshops and model-making sessions for children. This inclusive approach has cultivated a culture of collaboration and collegiality among the team members, who embrace their roles as custodians of the space. By nurturing creativity and facilitating excellence, the studio contributes to the advancement of design standards across the industry.
